Winter Warmers 2008

During the winter season of 2008 an excellent series of afternoon art events at the Auckland Art gallery featured many favourite poets and discussions - was able to cover a few of these, albiet briefly.

Winter Warmers at the Art Gallery - featured a “panel discussion about Arts and Cities featuring Tim Shadbolt, Richard Reid and Naomi McCleary”. Once again I was under time pressure and could only attend some of Tim Shadbolt’s presentation. Rambling stories of how he chanced the career move of a lifetime and built an international airport in Invercargill were interwoven with Tim’s original verse. And it was really really funny. Throughly enjoyed it.

July 12thPoetry and SongAnna Rugis, Jack RossIt was a last minute google alert triggered by Jack Ross’ blog that reminded me to walk down to the New Art Gallery - the room that was a restaurant under the gallery is now an arts event venue and each Saturday in July have been presenting extremely interesting shows - last week it was Belfast Poets and this week Anna Rugis performed her own songs interwoven with readings from Jack Ross - from his new novel EMO. Anna Rugis was a backup singer for Van Morrison, Cat Stevens and The Kinks. Her solo act was beautiful and immaculate.
Anna Rugis Her voice is extraordinary. (Mental note: get one of her CDs Reconcilliation, Cave Songs or the new Traffic in Gold.)
Jack Ross read elegantly from his novel EMO which came out from Titus Books in June 2008.

Jen Crawford also read her emotionally searing poetry.

Linn Lorkin and Hershal Herscher also performed their magic.
