You gave me a gift
To breathe and acknowledge the breezing light shining upon me
I thank you for being the special woman in my life
That brang another life into this mysterious world
To learn and experiment different ways and things
The compassion you’ve shown to the family
I thank you for
My accomplishments I have accomplished is only thanks to you
Without you I would be miserable
You gave me strength and love
What one could only die for
This is what a mother definition is
And you show it all
You’ve had your up and downs as it is only natural
You’re beauty you have past on to me, which I will pass on
Thanks for giving me light, life and love
I am you’re daughter that can only say in many ways how much I love you it is harder to say then which to show
Mother’s day is everyday which without you being my mum
I wouldn’t be as grateful for the smallest things
My four words say it all
I love you mum
Jun 07 2009
the tide came in for years
and people felt warm
and unlatched their positions
drifted out to sea a little
trying to get traction in the wind
the time went out
and they fight
to keep their homes from sinking
down to the level of shoreline
and anenomies clumped to rocks
their arcane inspection of drifting particles
at first sight a handshake is more important than the facts
revealing the self is a faux pas when advantages
became reasons to be eaten
the pack of needful people starving
wander the streets looking
not for the empty
houses but the ones with food in them
they keep them out with
dogs and razor wire fences
a war with hunger its mediator
but the man is coming to be paid
and the money evaporated so away
he takes the wires and the alarms
and the dogs are now hungry and
they close the doors on them
barricade themselves into
shells with concrete walls
and pray
for the
good old
days

Roaming the wasted land of central Auckland
up and down the alleyways the street hills
meaningless building sites now deserts
the empty businesses that used to be landmarks
now impossible shells around the corner building the
sold out towers of grime all that investment may fall apart
in reasonable time its part of the luck its blessed with
the reasonable suspicion of the citizens
the unbelieving glances off sidewalks
blue and clean 38 million hewn from
a sacred mountain and now underfoot
peddled off in small doses
stone floor riddled with foot prints
the begging shops with their wares
this lot must go as
we have another shipment
already coming in and
the bankers building the towers
are hoping for another summer
for local builders but an offshore Goliath
all dressed in silk ties and smiles
takes all in handshakes brewed in briefcases
infection of confidence spending big on the structure
then compel the tenants to enjoy the hours of
waiting for a customer who’s turn is it anyway
walk through this land where cars are considered
the enemy and its pedestrians rush through hoping
to get him for the six o’clock news

Open Mic (5 minute max)
MC: Renee Liang
featuring Guest Musician Fiona McEwen at 8 pm

Singer/songwriter and rhythm guitarist, Fiona McEwen’s unique, melodic style can be
described as “contemporary folk/pop/rock with a touch of flamenco”.
Fiona McEwen has been writing songs and playing music most of her life. Having studied recorder,
percussion, piano and viola while at school, in 1986 she sang backup in a band “Pacific Roadshow” which toured
around the South Island, and started learning the guitar and writing her own songs. After bringing up
three children, Fiona launched on the Auckland open mic scene in 2004 and has since performed at open mic nights
including Suede Bar, Diablo, Grand Central, Forde’s Front Bench, PR Bar, Snatch and ‘Speakeasy’ at the
Classic Comedy Bar, and at city markets, folk clubs, festivals, including Prana New Year Festival and Titirangi Festival
of Music, and various venues including Corban Estate Arts Centre, The Wine Cellar, Sky City, The Patriot,
The Occidental, Elevation Cafe and The Dogs Bollix. Fiona was also the featured singer/songwriter on
“The Verona Sessions” which screened live on Alt TV in August 2007.
Guest Poet: Charis Boos
“understated and clever, has an air of sophistication, she plays with words like a pro,
carrying listeners away with her imagery and styley metaphors”
